The part can be whatever material you want, but it needs to have the lube
grooves in it, for sure. The key to this part is it NOT breaking at the
brim of the hat, because once that occurs, the parts wear themselves down
and the end-float for the 2nd/3rd cluster gets bad REAL FAST and you'll
trash you mainshaft (and other stuff, like the 1st/2nd synchro hub).

If you can get this part in an alternate material, then go for it.

Many TR racers go for the latest TR6 gearbox which has a different
mainshaft, different 3rd gear main shaft gear and the STEEL bushing. Build
a 'box with this setup and you will be reliable. Talk to John Esposito of
Quantum Mechanics in CT - he builds a lot of these gearboxes.
