I well remember racing my GT-6 and the starter being usless, (Lucas, not the 
hi-torque type) and as we usually stoped a couple of times during each 
practice session from tuning or adjustments it turned in a problem.  I 
finally resolved the issue by keeping a water can handy and when the car 
came in I'd drench the starter. Fixed.  So probably the issue as several 
have mentioned is HEAT.
