Subject: [Fot] aluminum front hub availability

The Southwick aluminum hubs are specifically designed to prevent
breakage. Therefore they are not particularly lighter than the stock
ones but they are hell for stout. They have larger bearings which
still fit the stock spindles and the bearings last much longer
because of their size and because the aluminum hubs conduct the brake
heat away from them faster. The last time I talked with Soutwick
about them, the price was going to increase to somewhere in the $550
range because of the skyrocketing price of the bearings - reason
unknown. You can see this setup at

click on "jack's parts"

There are none available right now except for the two spare sets that
Bill Babcock wanted, and I purchased them for him and have them in
storage at my shop. I'll ship them to whomever Bill wants me to.

Here's the problem: Southwick is not a mail order parts supply
house. He is a machine shop. To make a run, he must purchase a
complete bar of 6" diameter 6061 T1 aluminum, which makes 25 pairs of
hubs. For him to make a run, he has a cash outlay of over $10,000.
Therefore unless he has orders in hand for at least half that number,
he does not make them. He is a small machine shop and cannot carry
this kind of inventory.

My only role in this thing is that I do the customer contact work for
Southwick, through this FOT list. I receive no compensation. I just
do it for the good of the sport. Several times in the last two years
I have surveyed the FOT list and asked how many folks want these.
Each time I have gotten a response of perhaps five definite customers
and perhaps five "maybe's". This is a very meager response - not
enough to warrant a run. So here's the offer:

If those folks on the list who will commit to purchasing one set of
hubs will email me, if I get 12 firm requests I will go to Southie
and do my best to negotiate a run.

Fair?
