No sure if you solved your problem or if you found a Solid State Stabilizer yet 
but, note they are availble from British Parts Northwest at what seems to be a 
reasonable cost.

Try the voltage regulator mounted on the back of the speedometer. I have
never had the problem but there has been a lot of discussion about this on
the 6pack list. I think some others have come up with a solid state version
of this regulator. There maybe some on Ebay.

Hello:

 

While driving my street TR6 today for the first time in a week or so, I
noticed the ammeter was "pegged" on the positive side.  The gauge remained
in the same state with the engine and ignition off.    The meter operated
normally last time I drove the car and I've not performed any work on the
car lately.  Electrical troubleshooting is not my strong suit so does anyone
have an idea what would cause this condition?  Thanks.
