I never use Permatex on diff covers. I think the paper gaskets were intended to 
be installed wet with oil. I do that on tranny covers but resort to the 
Permatex Flange Sealant 'grape jelly" or Hylomar sealant, both very thin. I 
file the edges and around the bolt holes to remove high spots.  Then I clean 
the surface with Scotch Brite. Drips still collect on the bottom edge but not 
really a leak.
