They would damage the speedo bearing which freeze and cause the angle drive to 
break. Angle drives can be repaired by removing the metal disks and shaping a 
short piece of speedo cable to replace the broken one.

There were some defective cables going around a few years ago but, IIRC, they 
were a bit too long at the speedo end and damaged the speedo.
