Were the carbs on progressive linkage? Just wondering, if you remember
the factory 3-2 bbl. setups came with a vacuum controlled end
carburetors, no idle circuits, they were designed to run either fully
closed or fully open. I have seen several guys put progressive linkage
on the carbs with poor success. To make them run properly with manual
linkage required the installation of three equal carbs. Even then they
worked best with progressive linkage.

Of course, your situation definitely appears to be a rich condition, the
plugs obviously indicate that as well. As I'm sure you are aware, header
heat is not a good indicator of lean mixture. Often elevated header temp
is because the mixture is still burning as it enters the header, as is
the case in a rich condition with retarded timing. If you aren't already
using a progressive linkage setup, I would advise it. At cruise one carb
is sufficient. Then you may need to rejet the end carbs. For what it is
worth, those are my thoughts on your situation.
