Keith, Bob S, and all ...... Yeah, I' ve heard of slugs of the
gun type,
slugs of the slimy, crawl around your yard type, slugs of beer( or Diet Coke
),
and some people might be seen as slugs ...... but in the world of auto racing
and hot rods, since the late Forties ....... the word slugs always referred to
PISTONS, and usually those of the aftermarket / racing type . Another
common term for pistons back then was " jugs ". Carbs, especially the
old favorite Stromberg 97s, were called jugs, too ...... and still are !
There was quite an array of racing and rodding jargon in the earlier
decades of auto sport ....... and sayings and slogans, too . Many of you
may recall, " If it don't GO - - - - CHROME IT " ...... Twinfire cranks
......
zee'd and cee'd .......Stu's tubes ...... sneaker sticks ...... stack &
stagger ....... hairpin radius roads ...... wishbones ( split or otherwise )
...... whacked ( recent
term ) ...... Chute Cutie ....... " Tip the can, label and all !!! " ......
sprinklers ....... hot wrench ...... cobaltic billet / 5 cycle /
Lageliminator /
or Hyperbolic camshafts ( from the Camshaft Wars Era ) ...... shaved heads
....... typewriter shifters ( you Mopar guys know what those were ) ......
nosed and decked ...... dago axles ...... mushroom tappets .......
ported & relieved ...... A - bones and T - tubs ...... Denver heads( don't
forget Bohnalite heads, either ) ...... sleeper ...... weedburners and
zoomies ...... mousetrap springs ....... Zephyr cogs ....... suicide axles
....... floating grilles ...... Goldfish Bowls( AMC Pacers ) ........
shrinking panels ...... chrome goodies ....... cheater slicks .......
sandbaggers ....... getting " top ended " ....... degree wheels ......
strokers / mags / huffers / slipper clutches / torched springs / radiused
wheelwells / diggers / railjobs / bugs & cutdowns / gophers & railbirds /
" leavin' late "/ " lunching " motors / trannies, mills, and Cad-LaSalle
boxes
.......Hemis / semi - hemis / four bangers / cammers / boat anchors /
Chizlers / Tin Indians / Ponchos / Rajos and twelve ports .......
" dropping "your tranny " ......" banging second " ....... " stuffing it "
in the wall ...... redlighting ...... shortshifting ....... bangshifting
.......
swapping pinks ...... acid dipping ...... glass noses ...... " driving it
out the back door "...... visiting the " crash house " ...... " get a wheel
under him " ....... " take a round out " ...... ratchetjaws & hotshoes.......
also rans, leadfoots, and hardchargers ...... knockoff hubs & crash buckets,

the lights ...... radiused cranks & floating bearings ....... teflon buttons
and gapless rings ...... rockblock filler and nitrided crankshafts ......
posi rears and Detroit lockers ...... flips & wheelies ....... banjoes

or Dyno Don Nicholson's wagons ? ...... real HAULERS !!! )
This could go on and on ....... but you can see where some folks
would wonder what language you were speaking here ...... some rather
strange names and phrases to non-racing fan types !
There are an awful lot more names, terms, phrases and slogans
from all those years gone ...... colorful words from colorful events
in a long parade of automotive mayhem, mastery, and masterpieces,
heroes & villians ....... winners and losers, friends and fun .......
and ALWAYS : THE WONDERFUL SOUNDS of thundering racecars
and POWERFUL ENGINES, singing their SIREN SONG to me !!!
Just a little of my memories of a ( misspent youth ? maybe ......
but, nevertheless ) ....... many of the GREATEST TIMES in my life !!!
                    Thanks for the Memories .......
                          Bruce D. Ferguson
