Knowing that salt water is highly conductive, why not just measure the
conductivity of the salt. Would be curious to know if a simple Fluke
multimeter would be able to take readings. Since no scale is available you
would have to create your own baselines. Placing the probes at various
distances apart starting at 3" up to about 3' would be enough then repeat
these reading about every hour. I think you would not need to penetrate deep
as your are running on the surface. If several racers were to take these
readings a good math major ahha "Mayf" might be able to extrapolate some
usable data.
