I had exactly this combination in a 1990 E 150 and a 96 E350 Van....
They worked quite well, especially with an open trailer. Towing from
Michigan we experienced no difficulty at all till we hit Whyoming. Pulling
the big hills was not without some concern and terrible mileage. I have
been told that the 460 acutlly gets the same mileage while towing. Both
vehicles had no problems with tranny, as both had rather large coolers. The
E4OD is now the 4R100.
Towing with the E350 5.8L with a 24 foot enclosed trailer was much tougher.
Any grade was really hard work. Neither of my trucks had high miles so I
can't really speak to the long term durability. My current E350 with
Powerstroke Diesel and 4R100 is hopefully my long term tow vehicle.
If you are towing relatively light weight and open trailer I would not
hesitate with the powertrain you suggest.
