For those of you wondering about the location of the track and what is
happening here is a quick recap from USFRA president Gary Allen.  He has
been working closely with the BLM on the pumping project and salt analysis.
Actually, the current courses are on the highest part of the salt.  The area
is basically a salt dome and the course area is 4 to 8 inches higher than
the area along the international course area.  The salt is better there
because the NaCl salt precipitates out in the higher area first as the water
drys out and the MgCl2 and other impurities (KCl, SO4, KCO2, etc.) stay in
solution for the longest and follow the water to the lower areas.  Therefore
the first 4 miles or so of the Int'l course is loose and rough and not
suitable for racing now because it is the lowest elevation of the salt dome.
You are correct in that the dome of the salt is the thickest area of the
salt crust.
