MOST-ACCURATE CLOCK DEVELOPED
Scientists have used the latest laser technology to develop
the most accurate clock ever built. Published reports indi-
cate that the new type of atomic clock produces as many as
a quadrillion "ticks" per second. Developers say the inven-
tion is up to 1,000 times more accurate than the current
generation of atomic clocks which are -- for all intents and
purposes -- "right on" all the time. The new clock could be
used to probe Einstein's theories.
During the past 40 years timekeeping has made a quantum leap
for consumers. As recently as the 1960s radio station's
clocks could vary as much as several seconds an hour. Then
the invention of the quartz movement brought a new degree
of accuracy. Now clocks as inexpensive as $20 can pick up
the shortwave time standard and set themselves with accuracy
known previously only in laboratories.
