Just thought I'd bring folks up to date on my electric land speed racing
motorcycle project.
Dale Martin suggested I contact the manufacturer of the tires I was
planning on using on my bike (Dunlop D205s, a 140/80ZR17 in front and a
170/60ZR18 in the back) to make sure they were up to the speeds and loads
my bike will be subjecting them to. I also wanted to see if there'd be any
problems running a rear tire on the front of the bike, not that I'm
expecting any but I thought I'd see what they'd say. So, I emailed Dunlop
and when I didn't hear back I called them, which is what they suggest on
their website. I didn't expect it to go anywhere, especially when I talked
to one person and was getting all the standard answers. But then he did the
unexpected and gave the name of another person to call. From there I got an
email contact and was put in touch with another person that is involved in
their racing program (I think). I still don't have all the info I am
looking for, but I am impressed that they are responding and are even
coming up with some suggestions, which so far is to run the D207 200/50ZR17
(rated for a 853 lb load). In one email I got copied on they were even
suggesting running some drum tests on the tires at the speeds and loads the
tires would see on my bike. I'll let you know if they do end up running any
tests and what the results are.
BTW - the bike is still being built. I didn't have much time to work on it
this whole summer with my new job, so I'm aiming for having it running in
the spring. Looking at a total weight with rider of around 1100 lbs and
speeds of around 150 to 175.
