OK Boys and Girls, this is an official notice to all:
Don and Rick Vesco's Turbinator did NOT suffer tire failure on the 458
record run. The tire was punctured by debris and we believe it maintained
it's shape and did not walk off the rim simply due to centrifugal force and
tight wheel housing area. As Don whoa'd down the streamliner it began to
swap identities, acting a bike and then a car, but since Don is a master
with either, he just stayed busy.
A special point of interest, Don did experience severe vibration after the
tire lost pressure that he half-expected to see the back half of the car
gone when he stopped. In fact, there was minimal damage to the body and then
only near the tire well.
It is TEAMVesco's position the Mickey Thompson tires performed perfectly
until one was poked with a gob of steel. As dedicated as the course stewards
are, they pick up every piece of debris, we were just damned unlucky to
"nail" one at plus 450.
TEAMVesco backs the integrity of Mickey Thompson tires 100% and fully intend
to use their wheels and tires on our assault of the 500mph barrier in the
2002 racing season.
