Bike rims

Hi All,
We were talking about the aero effects of spokes, fenders etc.;
Any ideas of differences between plain or 'shouldered' rims?  (eg. Boranni)
I would almost think that the spokes would set up a 'barrier' layer, so I
wouldn't expect too much difference, except they are pretty but will hold
dirt/salt?
