Hi Russ,
 I like to discuss modifying production stuff with the designer of the
stuff that I want to mess with. For instance when I want to talk to someone
about M/T Bonneville Tires, I call M/T and ask for an engineer. You might
try that approach. 
One thing that I have found out about trimming tires is that the OD of the
tread is not necessarily concentric with the cord structure. Out of round
is what I am trying to say. Some are nonconcentric by as much as 1/16". The
tire tech guys can also tell you how much rubber is
there....thickness...... and how close you can get to the cord structure.
Concentricity is the key apparently.
