I just had my new workshop floor finished a couple of weeks ago with a 2-
part polyurethane coating made by Sherwin- Williams. It is a very hard,
glossy finish made by the Industrial Division of S- W and it resists most
chemicals. I chose "Safety Yellow" but they make a number of other colors--
including blue.
The 2- part polyurethane coating is rollered or sprayed over a primer coat
and respirators or masks are recommended and the concrete should be acid-
etched for max adhesion. It isn't cheap-- this is primo stuff-- but it
should be attractive and easy to clean! Epoxy is good but it doesn't have
the gloss or chemical resistance of urethane and it tends to chalk over
time.Give your Sherwin- Williams dealer a call.
If you can get your hands on some similar stuff from Hughson Chemical Co.
called Chemglaze II or Chemglaze A, by all means do so! It is the BEST 2-
part polyurethane paint that I've ever used. It has a hard, glossy surface
but you can even paint fiberglass as it also has great flexibility. Its
abrasion resistance is outstanding. I have some parts that I painted 25
years ago (a nice blue!), some of that time sitting in the AZ sun & weather,
and the Chemglaze II still looks great.
The problem with Chemglaze is that it is an isocyanate system and it
requires precautions when using it. I just sprayed it on without even a dust
mask and I'm still around, but I didn't paint any big stuff or paint
indoors. Be careful with isocyanates. I think the reason it's so hard to buy
is that Hughson (a division of the Lord corporation) is worried about
lawsuits. In any case-- Chemglaze A or Chemglaze II is GREAT stuff. Somebody
could make a fortune retailing the stuff if they did it right.

Well, it is almost time to move into the new house. But before long I want
to put a finish on both the attached garage floor and the workshop floor. I
have been to Lowes and Home Depot and they sell Baer or some such that is a
single part paint. Works sorta ok, if you use all the prep gunk they
recommed. However, I had that in Alabama and it really didn't hold up as
well as I would like. I really admire the floor of the "Crank and Chrome"
shop floor which is a nice blue color. However, I have no clue as to what it
is. Does anyone have any good ideas on what I can use and/or what the C'nC
shop flor coating is? Or how to get in touch with them? Their web site has
no contact method....
Anyone?
