what I understand then is even if I qualified in the middle
mile I could actually end up setting the record in the last mile if the
actual average speed of the two passes was over the record.....

Not true - the computed average for the record must be the same mile;
3+3 = record average, 4+4 = record average, 5+5= record average.
3+4= no record, 4+5= no record, 3+5= no record, etc.
