I am not so sure that Halon products are the most effective fire
suppressant. If plumbed to the right spots it can certainly put out the
flames, but it does nothing to cool or otherwise prevent a flareup once the
bottle is exhausted. And that can be a real concern with the amount of real
estate LSR cars cover with their longer shutdown distances. The "Coldfire"
stuff (and perhaps other brand products) cools off hot areas as it puts out
the fire and may do a better job of keeping it from re-igniting. CO2 cools
also, and the powder stuff gets all over everything to form a sort of
barrier to oxygen. Also, I think there are toxicity differences between
Halon 1211 and 1301. You just have to look hard at the application and the
desired results.
