The reason for the tarps on the ground is to protect the salt from oil and
other spills. Most use a 20' x 20' or larger tarp that is staked down with
large 8" nails with large fender washers. This also makes for a surface
that can be swept off and clean to work from. As far as canopys the black
vented or mesh type is the best as it is non reflective, lets in air and
lets air out when the wind is blowing. This is what we use at inspection.
The bungee ties with the ball ends for attaching is the best and fastest way
to tie the mesh to the frame.
Motor cycle tie downs are an added bonus to keep it all on the ground. Long
spikes with a washer welded on near the nail head works great to attach the
MC straps to from the top of the frame to the ground. By the way, you will
in most cases have to drill a hole smaller then the spike in the salt to
drive it in. Take a look at the SCTA inspection set up if you get a chance.
It is a good idea to take the mesh down at night. A lot of the racers do
this, some are attached to their trailers as an added bit of security.
