HOORAY!

It has long been my opinion that the SCTA/BNI is the premier sanctioning
body for land speed racing. More than just an American organization, I
believe it represents the sport on a worldwide basis as evidenced by its
constant attention and dedication for more than a half century and that it
attracts participants from all over the world.

Where the FIA has more lengthy credentials and enjoys the distinction of
tradition, it has, unfortunately, been woefully neglectful of land speed
racing over the past 30 years. For that reason alone, the prestige has
shifted away form FIA and towards SCTA/BNI.

What has been missing was the willingness of SCTA/BNI leadership to stand up
and proclaim itself the authority on world speed record setting. Years ago,
when BNI International Records were established that was a good start, but
the prominence of BNI records were never developed in the public mind. Let
us hope that this new surge is world record substantiation and documentation
does not fall victim to future apathy.

In essence, what LSR is lacking "de facto" is a world authority that takes
its responsibility seriously by doing its duty in a timely and efficient
manner.

As a back-up, the FIA listing will be updated. Racers and enthusiasts should
recognize that many people still hold dear their FIA records, that such a
record contributes to a long heritage line of speed luminaries, and that
lives were extinguished trying to obtain one. For not only that
heart-wrenching reason, but also for the all the heroic efforts over the
past 100 years vying for a World Record, due respect ought to always be
proffered.

It is reasonable to conclude that if the FIA is not willing to pay a modicum
of attention and respect to World Land Speed Record setting, and if the
SCTA/BNI is willing to take up the responsibility and shepherding, then it
ought to do so not just at Bonneville, but where ever a world record might
be set.

Ah, now that's quite another barrel of frisky monkeys, isn't it?
