I learned to drive in 1950 in my Dad's '50 Buick Super with DynaFlush. In "D"
it was a single speed with torque converter, it did have an auxiliary "L"
gear, and you soon learned to use it so you could get across the intersection
before the light turned red again. Slow - my gosh, that thing was so slow I
didn't even borrow the car from him when I got my license..I was ashamed when
the stock Model "A" Fords would outdrag it from the stoplites on Washington
Blvd. in Ogden, Utah. Being a super, it was the smaller, less powerful
straight 8, but the Roadhog (pardon me, Roadmaster) 8 was not much of an
improvement. Olds and Cads of the same vintage with that deep first gear
hydra=matic tore it a new a$$...Now, in '54, when the Century with the big V8
came along, and technology had improved with the Dynaflows, things were a
bunch different, yet the old three speed column shift ones were still the
quickest.
All this changed in the fall of '54 - On the 8th day HE created the '55
Chevrolet.
