Hey Bob, how are you doing? Guess I'll throw in my 2 cents eventhou the
others might not like what I'm going to say. First and foremost a flathead
is not going to make the gazillions of HP. 2nd you need something that will
not take much of the HP your going to make. I'll say that everything has
probably been tried at one time or another. If you want a 4-speed condsider
using a Saginaw.(inexpensive) It works great with auto trans fluid in it at
the lakes and Bonneville and if you use one out of a Vega. the 1st gear is a
3.10 which means no push start if you like that. You didn't say what rear
you are using. Quick Change? closed or open drive line. Closed means early
Ford trans. Use a side shifting one for center steer cars...A friend just
put a GM 5-speed overdrive S-10 trans behind his blown flathead gas roadster
and likes it but he sits off to the left. Center steering is hard to use
with any of the fixed shifter transmissions...I use a 1958 aluminum T-10
out of a Corvette for years with no trouble. It has a lower resistance than
the newer ones and I have been told NOT to use real high RPM or lots of
horsepower with it. With my stock head GMC, that was not a problem. I used
1 cup of 90 weight and the rest ATF. I also used a 3-speed for a while with
the 1st/rev stuff removed. Great on resistance but I broke the GM stepdown
input shaft. If you get a T-10 and have it rebuilt. There are different
bearings for different uses. I just went thru the T-10 I'm using with our
fuel motor and put in bearings for torque not high RPM shifting. That T-10
has a special 1.11 3rd gear.
For shifting in a center steer car like mine I use Hursts with a removable
stick and bend to where it is comfortable.(Look on E-bay or a swaps for
parts) I even did one over to the left of my left leg but my son did not
like to shift with his left hand. We now have it under the steering wheel
about center. He uses his right hand; I use my left.. Good Luck J.D. Tone
PS. synthetic lube does not work well in Old Ford transmissions.
