Bill:
I'm going to try to be more brief than usual(!). I have 3 points:
1. Many factors whose quantities cannot be known precisely, can be estimated
well enough to produce very valuable results, if one has appropriate
experience-- otherwise engineers would never get to the end of many of the
calculations that they set out to solve.
2. In the past, there were several brands of blocks that were prone to
cracking. I know that some (like my Triumph TR-3) cracked-out at the head
studs before break-in was complete-- and it wasn't driven hard during the
period. NOT fatigue, I think. I don't know what caused all that cracking
(and wouldn't have understood if somebody had told me, back then)-- but I'm
sure glad those days are past! (One reason I'm not a "nostalgia racer".)
3. Whether a person is an engineer or not, I think it would be a rare lsr
racer who would actually calculate the fatigue life of the rods. Too many
other things to do to prioritize the time and energy!

(p.s. There are a couple of interesting issues in your letter I didn't
address; hope to get back to it later. Gotta go to ebay now, and see if
anybody bought my boots!)
