the other categories that have diesel classes and the impressive performance
of diesels, would there ever be reason to add a diesel class to lakesters?

Yes, there are some impressive performances by diesel powered vehicles
recently. Diesel power is allowed in Streamliner, Diesel Truck and Highway
Hauler classes.
Hang a couple of fenders on your lakester and run as a Streamliner.
