Unless you're a stickler for authenticity, I'll agree with Dave-- install a
1/4-20 insert. An alternate would be an insert with a 1/4-28 thread. These
are used in aircraft and you can get lots of nice exotic 1/4-28 stuff like
titanium or stainless on the surplus market-- use thread compound to prevent
galling, though.

here are a few choices..
Why not use a 1/4-20 insert to repair the thread and use a modern fastener
to go with it..Aren't these the same 'rocket scientists' that gave us the
3/8-20 as well.. Must not have been able to buy bolts so they made them..
LOL  Unless it is a museam piece why fight it so much just fix it with
modern stuff.
