Yep, been there-- done that. I got so much "experience" with smoke when I
was a kid that I can still identify the smell of smoke from a resistor, a
transformer, or a selenium rectifier!

When I was a youngster in ham radio we were taught that when adjusting 
the output circuits of a transmitter we should "...tune for maximum 
smoke."  Maybe radio equipment (high voltage) is different from cars 
(low voltage).
