Thanks for the excellent information Dave.

The things that need to be considered when looking at the oiling system are
fascinating but make my head hurt. It a delicate dance between too much and
too little.
The overall design requires a lot of knowledge and experience with each 
engine
and application. For instance, if you eliminate crankcase windage you 
may need
to use oil jets aimed at the bottom of the piston to put a metered 
amount of oil
back in the cylinder to cool the piston and lube the pin and rings.

And that's just one small example.
