Episode 53 will air at 9:00 p.m., Feb. 14 on the Discovery Channel.
Filmed at Vandenberg Air Force Base on their 3 mile long runway. They will be
filming a lakester built from an F-4 Phantom drop tank.
My brother-in-law was a Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Police at Vandenberg
and it used to kill him that the runway was only used for helicopters. It was
a 15,000 foot continuous pour intended as an auxiliary site for the Space
Shuttle to land. Something like 36" deep and flat, flat, flat! Every time he
came to World of Speed as a course watcher he would rave about the
possibilities at this site. If the Gold Coast guys could arrange for more time
out there can you imagine what they'd tell El Mirage and Maxton? It's only
seventeen miles or so from Jack Mendenhalls place in Buellton.
