Hagerstown, MD

BYU's Electric Vehicle Racing Team set a new quarter mile
acceleration record with their modified General Motors EV 1
at the "Power of DC" electric vehicle drag racing event June 11
in Hagerstown, Maryland.

The team posted a quarter mile elapsed time of 14.06 seconds
at 93 miles per hour, having originally set the record for this class
(the National Electric Drag Racing Association modified production
/class A) in April 2003, a record of 15.9 seconds elapsed time at
  77 miles per hour.

+++++++++

When GE gave EV 1's to 40 college engineering programs across
the country they didn't give them motors or controllers. The EV 1
body has a very low drag but they can't get tires that fit for land
speed
racing so they ended up drag racing the car. The record was set
using capacitors, not batteries.

This is the same Applied Engineering program that ended up pushing
their spec racer over 150 miles per hour at World of Speed a couple
of years back. Different students, same instructors and the Department
Chairman clocked over 130 twice on his Harley Sportster to qualify for
the USFRA 130 Club. Watch for more from this group. They really like
the salt flats.
