Dan,

You can use an LM7805 which is a standard 5 volt regulator.  Good for 1 amp 
(but at 1 amp it will need a heatsink and it will get hot - especially when 
driven from 12 volts).  With the device laying on the table with the legs 
toward you, from left to right the 3 pins are Input, Ground, and Output  (the 
tab on the top is ground also).  Put about a 1000 MFD cap between output and 
ground (+ to the output) if you want to pull the full amp - smaller cap if you 
are pulling less current or if your input is clean (like a DC source - in which 
case about 100 mfd is probably plenty).  Part is available from RS as well as 
www.mouser.com and digi-key.

5VDC converter posted recently.
