Veneer calipers for plywood ~ Good pun, Jon ! Actually, vernier calipers(
named after Pierre Vernier, ca 1766 )are not the only item named after this
gentleman ~ a vernier,
sometimes referred to as a vernier engine, is also the term for the smaller
auxiliary rocket engines used to steer, or correct, the course, of the
larger, main, rocket ...... I think that modern vernier calipers are available
with digital readouts, very useful for engine builders and machinists . I
only
have the basic ones with the graduated scales etched on the metal, and one
with the dial indicator-type readout, which was the best set-up way back when
I
bought it . Precision machinist tool purchases always came in secondary to
all the wrenches, screwdrivers and metal-bending / body / welding goodies for
my shop . I think most all of us have our own preferences of what areas /
systems of our cars we most like to work on and improve or modify ...... Yard
sales and flea markets often are a good source for these handy goodies, if
they are still in good shape, but I suppose the Harbor Freight, etc, type
outlets probably have new ones at really low buck prices. When I first got
serious
about thrashing on cars in the fifties, I was always proud to add any L.S.
Starrett measuring tools to my collection ...... back then I think they were
considered top-of-the-line, along with Brown and Sharpe tools, also
manufactured here in New England ......
Bruce ~ waiting for the snow due here soon, and admitting that I envy
you AZ, CA, and UT troops who are quite comfy around this time of year, as a
certain list-member / new resident of Utah gleefully reminded me yesterday
......" I'm in my tee shirt, and ....... "
