Hi all,
     Vernier invented the way the scale is made with a sub set of nine
divisions to match against ten on the main scale. This allows reading to one
more decimal place than the main scale divisions allow. This scheme is also
present on micrometer calipers, height gauges and many other measuring
tools. Generalized to describe anything that makes a fine adjustment
(vernier rockets)
