John: in addition to what has already been mentioned, most of the pumps you
see have been developed by or for drag racers.  Since these pumps are better
"pushers" than "suckers" they are usually mounted at or near the rear gas
tank.  Consider the total fuel mass in a 3/8 or 1/2" fuel line about 15 ft
long.  As you well know, the drag racing launch applies a significant G
force to everything. The fuel pump must push the fuel mass AGAINST this G
force, as wells as all upstream restrictions.  The pump must provide
adequate flow (without a pressure LOSS) to compensate for the G force. Flow
rating far exceeds the engine needs to compensate for these other losses.

If a strong BBC uses less than 60 gph why is it customary to use 500 gph
electric fuel pumps ? Do pump manufacturers exaggerate ? Are they rated at 0
