I forgot to mention:

Either too rich or too lean can cause most of the symptoms. However, the
fact that the engine speeds up when hot, in my experience, indicates
richness. It depends on other symptoms - idle beat, exhaust color, and
piston lift test, will tell for sure.

Hi Lew!  I'd bet on lean!!  like its running out of gas.  enough to idle ok,
then it leans out and backfires
