If you are splicing wires, then it's much better to solder them. 
Strip the ends, slip a properly sized 1 1/2 inch piece of heat
shrink tubing on one wire, spread the strands, then twist, and
solder.  After the joint has cooled, slide the tubing over the
joint and shrink.

If you must use a crimp connector, such as a spade terminal, I
have removed the insulation, sliped on shrink tubing, soldered,
and covered the joint.  If you must crimp the connector without
soldering the joint, tin the end of the wire first, you will get
a better crimp joint.

Also be sure to use the smallest connector that you can get the
wire into.  On many of the crimp connectors the color of the
insulator indicates the size of wire to use, and are not for
color coding the terminal itself.
