Gene,
    Undo the chromed oval-head screws that hold the dash to the car, flop
the dash toward your lap, and then you will have good access to the back
of the metal panel into which the lamp sockets are mounted.   While you
might be able to remove them from underneath the dash without its
removal, the sockets are old and brittle, so removing the dash is safer
for the sockets.  
    You may find that the tiny wire wrapped around the socket has
corroded away. It was there as a resistance so that the bulbs would last
longer.  You can use the socket w/o the resistance wire, but the heat
from the bulbs can be hard on the red and green lenses.  Someone on the
mg-T list suggested using a resistor on the socket, something I intend to
do next time the dash is out, but I have forgotten the value of the
resistor that should be used.
