John,

You really should have posted that to the group, not directly to me. There are 
lots of group members who know the finer points of the TD a lot better than I 
do. I'm replying to the group so others can pitch in.

If I remember correctly (which could be a problem):

Early TD brake drums are separate from the hubs. The countersunk machine screws 
are to make sure the drum is centered on the hub, and to hold the drum and hub 
together when the lug nuts are removed. The ends of the countersunk screws are 
peened over after assembly, to prevent disassembly. According to the TD/TF 
Workshop Manual the drum and hub are not meant to be disassembled.

Later TDs have one-piece hubs and drums.

As far as I know the two types are interchangeable, but you should ask the TD 
experts in the group to make sure.

If you're talking about the front hubs, the right-hand side has a right-handed 
thread, the left-hand side has a left-handed thread.
