>From memory, after doing a top-end rebuild on my factory V8, the oil pickup
comes through the front cover gasket, so a break in this could well suck in
air.  If the break were on the internal edge of the gasket any leakage would
simply fall back into the sump and not be visible.  Ditto for any leak in
the pickup pipe in the sump, of course.
