I'm currently driving a 67 MGB with 95k original mile, head has never been
off! Still has even compression, still runs great, feels a little tired
compared to a fresh rebuild, but nothing you would notice without the
comparison car available... THE BIG THING is oil pressure...a sound B motor
should hold at least 55lbs hot at 3k rpm, and the more the better  (mine runs
at 60-65 and a good fresh rebuild should do 70++)
OIl changes are critical, and something along the lines of Castrol 20-50 is
called for, and make SURE you get the right oil filter... in an early car,
that means felt, not paper, and in the later cars with the spin-on filter,
make sure you get the later filter which has the proper internal valving
(there is a reason they changed the design!) Don't buy cheap filters.. or
Frams(!). The proper brit or japanese filters are noticably heavier than the
cheepos which translates to better construction and more filter material
inside.
 If you have a 1968 or newer, keeping it cool is very important, as the smog
pump and (later years)EGR and cat.converter play havoc with engine temp as it
is. 
I personally know of a 1972 B which was bought new, and now has over 350k
miles on it. 2 valve jobs, about 5 clutches, and 1 (ONE) full engine rebuild
is all it has had.  (your mileage may vary)
(Perhaps said uncle disregarded all of above advice and drove without water
and oil on board....)
