In this case, the most convenient ground is probably also the most reliable. 
 I stuck a piggyback spade connector onto the lighter ground, and attached 
the radio ground to that.

I don't know if this is neeeded info, but if you're looking for an 
always-hot line to attach the lead that maintains the radio's memory, 
there's no need to string a line all the way to the fusebox.  Do another 
piggyback on the purple wire to the rocker-style lamp right above the radio. 
 (Bonus:  purples are on a fused circuit.)
