With the clutch free of the rear of the engine, the transmission's front
shaft does not have to be pulled out as far - just far enough to be removed
from the pilot shaft of the crankshaft. Normally this shaft would have to be
pulled out far enough to clear the pilot shaft and the clutch.

Hopefully I used the right terms - I am not a mechanic, at least
professionally. But I have done extensive mechanical work over the years on
my MGs.

Although this allows you to remove the transmission without removing the
engine, it is still a tight squeeze in and out. With my OD unit, its
debatable which is harder - the effort it takes wrestling the transmission
in and out or the extra disassembly to move the engine forward or out.

But I have done it all ways - engine/transmission together, engine alone,
transmision alone, and transmission alone with engine moved forward five or
six inches.

Most likely, I will move the engine forward again to get to the clutch. If I
am really motivated, I may even replace the rear engine seal in an attempt
to see if its possible to have an LBC that doesn't leak oil (at least for a
few months).

Another question to all - how do you tell if the pressure plate is good or
bad? I am suspicious of my current one, and I am pretty sure I have a spare
that has been in a box for some ten years. Or am I being too cheap?
