Aiee!! Curse me for not having mentioned that possibility. It occurred to
me, but I neglected to mention it.
Had a friend who owned a TR7. He fell into the same trap of assuming that a
full expansion tank meant a full system. He was running with no coolant *at
all*. His temperature gage didn't read high, which also led him to believe
everything was fine. Of course, the sending unit wasn't submerged in any
fluid, so the temperature reading from the gage had no relation to reality.
End result was that he thoroughly destroyed that engine.
Anyway, I found the easiest way to fill the cooling system on my 77 was to
remove the top radiator hose at the thermostat housing, tip it upwards, and
pour coolant in. Once the coolant starts dripping from where the hose was
connected, the system's pretty much full. Replace the hose and use the
little plug on top of the thermostat housing to top it off.
