Pat,
   Don't worry about the begining, or ending of the segment. Align the Rotor
in the approximate position, that is pointing directly at the #1 plug wire,
put the car in high (4th gear) and push it backwards slowly until the
crankshaft has turned about 15 or 20 degrees (that will be just a short
push). Then connect a test light  or multi-tester to the primary wire
connector on the side of the distributor. SLOWLY move the car forward until
the light/tester indicates the points have opened. STOP. Check the timing
marks. They should be close. If not move the distributor in the proper
direction while watching the tester/light. When you get the point to just
open at the correct timing mark on the pully, the car will be within a couple
of degrees of timed. Close enough to crank and set the timing with a proper
timing light
