Sometimes overdrive ( and thanks on starter )

  Lately my OD has bee cranky about engaging.  It'll work fine for a  
while, stop, then start enganging again without any obvious ( to me )  
reason.  My first guess is to check the wiring for a loose connection  
somewhere, but I thought I'd sound out any other possibilities first.

  Also, thanks to whoever posted the tip on banging the starter.  I  
was getting pretty frustrated with the solenoid click, took a  
rubber-ended hammer and took it out on the starter - in as much as I  
could get a good whack at it.  It started right up and even *seems*  
to turn easier than before...and saved me mangling the thing trying  
to replace it.
