2) There is alot of heat reflected off the catalatic converter. It has
melted a three way vacuum hose connector near by twice. Any ideas why
this is so hot? Is there an exhaust system made which eliminates the
convertor or can't I do that?
The car is great when running but right now its just HOT in the wrong ways.

Before removing your cat, check your state or local smog laws. Per a local MG
specialist (Milwaukee, WI), the cat wasn't required by law in WI until 1979.
The 1975 MG had the single carb without the cat. Only the front pipe on the
exhaust system is different. I purchased the front pipe from Special Interest
Car Parts for about $15 and removed the Cat (any net wisdom on Special Interest
Car Parts --- this was the first order I placed with them and they screwed it up
twice).
