I did this job the weekend before last. My shock links did not want to come
off either. I used an impact wrench but they just spun. After a few seconds
of that I just took off the whole shock with link and all. After putting
together the spring with all its assorted u-bolts and pads and plates and
bottom plates I bolted the shock back in its place again.

Using two jacks also made the whole process very easy. I had the car body on
stands, and used one jack for the axle and one for the spring. You can do it
with one but then you have to have some way of supporting the axle while you
are compressing the spring.
