<I take my spark plugs out before a long trip and clean them using a
<motorized wire brush. It does a great job. However, I "feel" like the
<cleaned spark plugs eventually don't do as well as new plugs. Granted, I
<can't clean down inside of the plug but is this a problem. How many times
<should you clean the plugs before throwing them away and putting in new
<ones. (I hate it when my Scottish heritage shows)

Don:

A spark across the plug is most consistent when all the edges of the plug are
sharp. A wire wheel, sand blaster, and use round the surfaces that sparks
jump across. That is why race drivers actually file the edge of the plug,
although that doesn't last very long either. On standard plugs with standard
ignition, I wouldn't count on plugs lasting over 5000 mi. With electronic
ignition & platinum tip plugs, maybe 20,000. Of course they would last alot
longer with computer controlled sequencial multiport fuel injection, but hey,
these are MG's, not F*rds.
