Dave,
I am getting ready to put a Spax kit on the front but am looking to go with
a Monroe conversion for the rear of my GT. Do you know what the Monroe
shock number is that was supplied with your Moss/Monroe rear kit? I have
been considering the Monroe rear conversion that is being advertised in
Hemmings (Novis, I think, or Nexus) just $60. I don't know which Monroe
shock they use either. Anyone out there tried the Nexus conversion?

Pat,

Interesting you wanted opinions about tube shock conversions, as I spent two
weekends ago under the car putting the MOSS/Monroe front & rear conversions
on my 1974 MGB-GT.

The installation was straight forward, I did have to hammer some sheet metal
(inner front fender well on the passenger side) to clear a bolt, and you do
have to open the front brake lines to re-route them (and re-bleed them).

The front shocks are very firm (better than rebuilt lever units I think),
and the car handles GREAT! I can't believe the difference (my front shocks
were totally shot). BUT...

The rear shocks are waaaaaay too stiff! I appreciate the sports car ride as
well as the next person, but the guys at MOSS have taken it just a little
too far. They have provided gas filled shocks in the rear, and I believe
they should be air filled... or whatever would make them less STIFF...
anyway, the result is a GT that rides like a lumber wagon. I mean it's
BADDDD!

I talked to MOSS technical, and they are talking to Monroe about something
that may be more civilized, but for now, the best they could do was to
recommend letting some air out of the rear tires.

I think the tube shocks are better than the lever-type (reaction to smaller
movements, reliability, etc.) and will probably make the conversion to my
roadster too, when it's shocks give out.
