On the subject of adding upgraded head lamps to an MGB.
One thing to remember is that Watts are Watts no matter which headlamps
are installed in the car. All the aftermarket headlights (Hella, Marchal,
Cibie etc) can be ordered with legal bulbs (35/55W ??). These headlights
with legal bulbs are a HUGH improvement over the standard Lucas units.
There should be NO need to add an alternator or re-wire the system to
install these units because you are still drawing the same amount of
current.
I installed a set of Cibie "Z" beams many years ago and have been very
pleased with their performance. 1 modification I did was to wire the
dipped beam to stay on when the high beam is selected. I have no problems
with the bulbs burning out or any other heat related problems. I also
have a set of Cibie Super Oscars mounted on the bumper which come on with
the high beam. And yes I am using relays !!
BTW - I think I paid $85 for the "Z" beams with the standard bulbs
